Elite Belle‘s team will use the 2013 CB Cox Stakes as a trial for the Group 2 Perth Cup on January 1, 2014.
The five-year-old was in top form t the beginning of this prep, failing to place worse than second in her first four race starts.
Elite Belle won the Listed WA Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on November 23, 2013, against her own age.
However, she could not muster anything better than sixth when she ran in open company in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic last start.
Now managing owner and breeder, Bob Peters, is keen to see how Elite Belle performs when she again meets an open field in the 2013 CB Cox Stakes.
Peters is also hoping to get an idea for how Elite Belle handles the 2013 CB Cox Stakes’ 2,100 metre distance.
While she is proven over 2,400 metres in the past, having won the WA Oaks as a three-year-old, Peters isn’t sure that will translate to a top staying performance in her five-year-old season.
“We’ll see how she goes handling the distance,” Peters said.
“She got over it when she was young but that doesn’t mean they get it when they’re older.
“The Cox Stakes is the best stepping stone to the cup and if her and Moonlight Bay did go reasonable, they’ll be suited dropping back to the handicap.”
Elite Belle has won four of her 15 race starts and has earned more than $220,000 in prize money during her horse racing career.
